Kookaburras, Hockeyroos and Olympians

Josh Simmonds - Olympian 2021

Josh began his hockey career at Doncaster and played for the NT Stingers, Victoria Vikings and National U-21 side, before making his debut with the Kookaburras in 2018.

He played in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics winning a silver medal.

He is currently a member of the Doncaster Premier League team.

Hayley Padget - Hockeyroo 2018

After playing for the Austrlian U21 side in 2013, Hayley made her debut with the Hockeyroos in 2018 at the SOMPO CUP Four Nations Women's Hockey Ibaraki International Tournament in Japan, scoring a goal against the host nation. She also played in the Champions Trophy and the FIH Pro League

Hayley played in Doncaster’s 2015 WPL Premiership team.

Kiran Arunasalam

Kiran Arunasalam - Kookaburra 2017

Kiran was first selected in the Australian junior team in 2015. He was part of the Australian squad that won the 2016 Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia. He made his senior team debut in 2017 and played 17 games with the Kookaburras.

Madi Ratcliffe - Hockeyroo 2016-18

A member of Doncaster’s 2015 WPL Premiership team, Madi played for the Jillaroos in 2016, and debuted for the Hockeyroos in that same year. She played 39 games, and scored 9 goals, and won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Russell Ford - Olympian 2012

Russell Ford debuted for the Kookaburras in 2006 and played in 158 matches over the course of a decade. He competed in the 2012 Olympics, where Australia defeated Great Britain 3-1 to win the bronze medal.

He scored 72 times and represented Australia at the Olympic Games, the World Cup, four Champions Trophies, two Oceania Cups, and the World League semi final and final tournaments.

“Rusty” was a member of Doncaster’s State League 1 Premiership team in 2009.

Chris Cirello - Olympian 2012, 2016

Chris Ciriello first made his debut for Australia in 2008 and has since racked up 194 caps for the Kookaburras.

Known for his effective drag-flick on penalty corners, Ciriello scored 115 times for his country.

Over his career, Cirello has won one Olympic bronze medal, two Commonwealth Games gold medals, two Champions trophies and one World Cup.

Chris was a member of Doncaster’s State League 1 Premiership team in 2009.

Maria Romagosa - Olympian 2008 (Spain)

Maria has represented Spain in Hockey at two World Cups (Perth 2002, Madrid 2006) and one Olympic Games (Beijing 2008). She played over 100 games representing Spain National team finalising her International career in 2013. 

She joined Doncaster in 2014, and has held the roles of Junior Development Officer, Women’s Head Coach and Hockey Director.

Joel Carroll - Olympian 2012

Joel made his national team debut in 2009. In 2010, he represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games, and earned a gold medal at the Games. In 2010, he won a gold medal at the Champions Trophy. He was part of Australia’s bronze medal winning squad at the 2012 Olympics.

Originally from the Northern Territory, Joel moved to Melbourne and began playing hockey with Doncaster in 2018.

James Elmer - Olympian 2000

James ‘Jimmy’ Elder won a bronze medal for Australia in men’s hockey at Sydney 2000. The Kookaburras fell short in reaching the gold medal final against the defending champion Netherlands. The game ended 0-0, leading to a penalty shoot-out where the Netherlands emerged victorious. Despite the loss, the team showed great resilience in the bronze medal match, defeating Pakistan 6-3 in an impressive display.

Andrew Smith - Olympian 2008

In 2008, Andrew Smith won a Bronze Medal in Beijing. He played 114 games for the Kookaburras from 2002 to 2008.

Andrew was the captain of Doncaster’s State League 1 Premiership team in 2009.

Jeremy Hiskins - Commonwealth Gold Medalist 1998

Jeremy Hiskins played 32 matches for the Kookaburras and scored 17 goals. He won Commonwealth Gold in 1998, and silver medals at the World Cup and Champions Trophy.

Jeremy played in Doncaster’s 1993 State League 1 Premiership team.

Jason Manos - Champions Trophy 1996

Jason Manos was a member of the 1993 and 1997 State League 1 Premiership teams at Doncaster. He played 8 games for the Kookaburras in 1996, including the Champions Trophy in Madras, India.

Lachlan Elmer - Olympian 1992, 1996

Lachlan Elmer, a two-time Olympian, earned medals for Australia in two games: silver in 1992 and bronze in 1996. Elmer was 23 years old when he first competed in the Olympics in Barcelona. In the final match, Australia's hockey team faced Germany and lost 2-1, securing the silver. Four years later in Atlanta, the Kookaburras redeemed themselves by defeating Germany 3-2 in the bronze medal match.

Kim Rayner

Kim Rayner - Hockeyroo 1989-1993

Kim played 4 matches at the 1989 Champions Trophy in West Germany, winning a silver medal.

She was a part of the Doncaster team that won back-to-back State League 1 Premierships in 1988 and 1989.

Australian Representatives who have played for Doncaster

  • Meg Pearce

    • Meg started playing hockey at Doncaster when she was six years old. She played on the Under-21 Victorian state team in 2014 and 2015, and played with the Victorian Vipers, before moving to Brisbane. She joined Brisbane Blaze for the 2019 season, and was selected to play for the Hockeyroos in 2021.

  • Sally Carbon

    • Sally was a Hockeyroo from 1987 - 1994, winning gold at the 1988 Olympics. She moved to Melbourne after her international career, and played with the Women’s State League 1 team.
