Women’s Round is one of Doncaster best but not enough

Doncaster’s Premier League Women ventured to Southern United’s home pitch for the Sunday match of Round 5, Women’s Round.  Southern are the greatly improved side in the Women’s Premier League in recent years just losing the 2018 Preliminary Final to the ultimate Premiers, Hawthorn.  Southern have started 2019 in a similar fashion, undefeated to date.

Doncaster were not phased at all by Southern’s recent form as the match started with a mid-field battle.  Sam Snow, Liz Flack and Aimee Dickson were very solid in defence and the contests were between the 25 metre lines.

Just minutes before quarter time a quick play the ball by Southern had the ball in the home team’s scoring circle and a Doncaster back stick set up a Southern short corner.  Two powerful shots at goal are saved but the ball remains in the circle and the third shot does find a way through the congestion and Southern are on the board.

Doncaster is again under the pump with the ball in the Southern scoring circle in less than a minute of the second quarter starting.  Tess Jackson saves the shot but the ball is deemed too high and a short corner follows.  Once again Jackson sends the ball out of danger.

The match follows the first quarter with Southern pushing plenty of ball into attack but Doncaster’s defenders are not allowing much ball to go too deep.  When the ball does threaten the net, Jackson is at her best.

In the first minute of the third quarter another Southern short corner sees Jackson saving yet another genuine shot at goal.  The ball remains live and it is sandwiched between a Southern stick and a Doncaster stick.  When the ball bubbles free it bounces in the net and Southern go 2-0 up.

Southern continued to dictate much of the play, pushing forward with constant speed.  Doncaster’s defenders remained equal to the task.  Chloe Burns, Shae Jones and Annie Hebb were also winning more mid-field contests.  While Doncaster were two goals behind, the Dons’ door remained open.

The final quarter is a continuation of a wrestle and as the clock ticked, the two goal gap appeared too big for the Dons.  But Doncaster didn’t concede and more ball was played out in the Doncaster half.  Then with just a minute remaining to play, a quick play the ball by Southern just outside their circle had Doncaster’s defenders wrong footed and the home side slotted their third goal.

Doncaster 0 were defeated by Southern United 3
