Selection Policy & Procedures

Those Responsible for Selection

TOP SQUAD

Premier League

PL coach has the final say in the selection of PL.

Premier League Reserves

PLR is selected by their coaches in consultation with PL coach and selectors. (To be selected in the top two teams players must demonstrate an ability to play or considered by selectors to have development potential to play at these levels. Training is essential if players are to be selected.)

Pennant A

PA is selected by their Coach in consultation with PL coach, PLR Coaches and selectors. To be considered for this team training is very important, but ability and/or development potential are key selection criteria.

CLUB GRADES SQUAD

Pennant B, D & Metro

PB, PD and the Metro grades are selected by their Coaches/Captains in consultation with selectors.

Player Seeking Promotion

For players seeking promotion their attitude, ability, development potential and training will all be taken into account. As part of the promotion and demotion process, team Coaches/Captains will play a key role.

Players who are struggling will be spoken to by their Coaches/Captains and given a chance to improve.

All players must realize that the Club comes first and there may be times where team balance and development takes preference.

Selection Process

Important for ALL PLAYERS

Once teams are selected it is the players’ responsibility to inform their Captain or Chairmen of Selectors if they are not available.

Regardless of what team you are selected in, from round one, you are to assume that you are in that team unless told otherwise.

All teams are finalized EACH THURSDAY before PL/PLR training.

All teams will be selected and Coaches/Captains will be notified.

Teams will notified by Captain/Coach via Whats app or Team App. It is each player’s responsibility to check.

IF YOU ARE ILL OR INJURED AFTER THURSDAY IT IS THE INDIVIDUAL’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE CHAIRMAN OF SELECTORS or Coach SO A REPLACEMENT CAN BE FOUND. Top Squad players must notify the Premier League Coach.

As a club we do not wish to send sides into matches short of players.

Players who do not attend matches and fail to inform the appropriate person

If a player fails to attend a match without informing the appropriate person there is a strong possibility that they may not be considered for selection the following week(s). PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND. We consider this type of behaviour unacceptable and extremely rude to team mates and club officials.

If for any reason you have issues which your captain can’t or doesn’t answer, or you have other queries, please contact Women's section chairperson.

Finally, it is important to take into consideration the following points, which are in no particular order, but are all relevant to selection.

  • ability, and game performance
  • training performance
  • team balance and stability
  • availability of an appropriate position
  • strength, fitness, and mobility
  • attitude, discipline, determination, teamwork
  • decision making, and ability to read the game, ie do you have a good “hockey brain”
  • leadership and/or experience
  • potential
  • There is a limit on the number of juniors that can reasonably play in any team
  • Has the player earned a chance or the position they have meets  specific needs of the team or the club for that week
  • player “ins” and “outs” in higher grades have ramifications for all teams
  •  remember that the club is bigger than the individual

Training

Only players selected or invited by PL/PLR coaches are expected to attend all top squad training sessions. Selected junior girls team may train with top squad as discussed with PL Coach.

The top squad will be selected about 2-4 weeks before the season starts. These players will be  players who are going to play PL, PLR, and PA - with some junior players (playing seniors) who may play PLR/PA at some stage or have the potential to play these grades. The PL/PLR coach may invite a junior player along to the session to help the transition from juniors to seniors. In summary if you have not been invited by PL/PLR coach or selected in PL, PLR or PA you are expected to attend club grades training on a Wednesday night..
