Doncaster - the Survivor on Survivor Day                                                              Men

By Gary Kelly

Saturday saw the Doncaster boys take on the bottom of the table Mentone at home on a cool but thankfully dry afternoon.  The game started at a quick pace with Doncaster having most of the running. Around 5 minutes in, Mentone were running to their offensive baseline then crossed the ball into the D and across the face of goal where the ball was deflective past the reach of Adam Truepenny, and the first goal was on the board.

The running for the rest of the quarter was  back and forth with Doncaster’s mid field creating opportunities and the Mentone defence was up to the task.  With around 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter Doncaster turned the ball over in their defensive D with a couple of quick passes finding Kiran Arunasalam who took the ball into the D and coolly and calmly slotted the ball past the Mentone keeper into the back of the net. Score is 1 each.

The 2nd quarter ran pretty much the same as the first with the ball moving end to end until Zac Meadon, who was everywhere today, made an intercept and passed off to Daniel McBride who took the ball down to the offensive baseline. He crossed the ball into the D, the ball was deflected up into the air, Luke Davidson standing at the far post took the ball in the air and punched the ball into the back of the net. Doncaster 2:1 up which is the half time score.

The third and fourth quarters saw the ball moving end to end again with plenty of movement but neither team were able to capitalise on the multiple opportunities. Both defences having to work very hard to keep the attackers at bay. With about 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter Tom Habal was given a green card for an alleged swinging stick tackle, not long after this Mentone earned a short corner.  The proceeding play saw the ball in the back of the net however the umpire did not award the goal as the shot was too high. Doncaster created many opportunities and were peppering the goals, but the shots were well defended or wide of the goal. Plenty of individual genius from Arunasalam and Bevan Fernandes amongst others were creating headaches for Mentone but they held strong.

With 2 minutes remaining Mentone took their keeper off and the Doncaster boys pushed hard towards the attacking D but to no avail. The final hooter sounds and the score remains 2-1, a win to Doncaster but the scoreline is not as convincing as it could have been.

Doncaster competitive but not on the scoreboard                                                Women

The Doncaster girls faced a tough opposition in Mentone Hockey Club, who have proved to be one of the stronger teams in the competition this year.

The first half of the game saw the Donny girls play some of their best hockey this year. An early goal to Mentone didn’t deter the girls who were extremely competitive and continually fought hard in attack and defence, moving the ball well and staying in the contest.

Constant forward pressure created a turnover from Mentone late in the 1st quarter with new Spanish recruit Tania Escaich capitalising on a loose ball and pushing the ball to Manisha Arunasalum in the circle who slotted the ball past the Mentone goalie to bring the score to one all.

Mentone answered with another goal early in the second quarter when a strong shot on goal went through the defence.  Undeterred the Doncaster girls pushed hard into attack with a free hit from Shae Jones late in the second half finding Liz Flack in the circle who promptly sent a hard shot at goal, deflecting off a Mentone player into the back of the net.  The girls went into half time with the scoreboard reading 2-2.

The fast pace of the game continued into the second half with Tess Jackson in goal making many good saves for Doncaster.  Despite the girls best efforts, they struggled to maintain their intensity of the first half and Mentone managed to score three goals in short succession.

Unfortunately the final score of 5-2 was not a good reflection of the game played out on the field.
